The National Foundation for Medical Research and Innovation (NFMRI) officially changed its name on the 2nd January 2014 to reflect its updated mission and extended focus on innovative areas of research.
A not-for-profit organisation, the NFMRI’s mission is to "advance innovations in medical research related to the nature, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and incidence of disease and other health problems that have a significant impact on the health of humans".
The Foundation seeks to partner with researchers and donors to identify innovative research projects and objectives, and provide support and knowledge to researchers to maximise social returns from their grants.
Through its new vision, NFMRI is looking to maximise potential benefits from early biomedical research. By "thinking differently and doing differently" the research and development of new drugs, diagnostics, vaccines and devices can be supported by philanthropy – which can boost funding and knowledge translation in the innovation pathway and help to advance early innovations, manage risk and facilitate collaborations between other scientific disciplines, industry and investors.
