"Novel mechanisms driving the tumour promoting actions of the
receptor tyrosine kinase, EphB4: proteolytic and nuclear regulation.”

Dr Sally-Anne Stephenson

  • Lecturer, Faculty of Health, QUT
  • Group Leader, Eph Receptor Biology Group, Cancer Research Program, Cells & Tissue Domain, IHBI, QUT
  • Investigator, APCRC - Q

Along with her research activities at QUT, Dr Stephenson is a Lecturer in the School of Biomedical Sciences. She is the Chief Scientific Officer of BenEphex Biotechnologies Pty Ltd in Adelaide, and in 2006 received the Woman of Distinction in Medical Research Award from the Asia Pacific Business Council for Women.

The main research interest of the Eph receptor biology group that Dr Stephenson leads is the EphB4 receptor tyrosine kinase and its contribution to epithelial cancers. Currently, they are developing monoclonal antibodies targeting this protein for testing as potential anti-cancer therapeutics.

Prof Adrian Herington

Professor Adrian Herington

  • Professor, Faculty of Health, QUT
  • Investigator, APCRC - Q, IHBI, QUT

After completing his PhD in Biochemistry at Monash University, Professor Herington spent two years as a postdoctoral fellow in the Laboratory of Dr William Daughaday, the "father of the insulin-like growth factors (IGF)”.

The recent focus of his research has been on the role and mechanisms of the action of the GH secretagogue and metabolic regulator, ghrelin, in hormone dependent cancers (prostate, breast and ovarian). Together with Assoc Prof. Lisa Chopin, he has pioneered studies on the expression, characterisation, and mechanism of action of ghrelin in stimulating cell proliferation in these cancer cells. More recent research interests in the
hormone-dependent cancer field involve the Eph/Ephrin receptor-ligand system, their regulation by kallikrein proteases, and their therapeutic implications in breast and prostate cancer.

Prof. Herington has a total of 187 research papers/major reviews published in highly regarded refereed international journals/books.
