Biography
Mandy Chandler (nee van Staden) completed a double degree in Chemistry and Applied Chemistry, followed by an Honours degree in Chemistry at the University of the Witwatersrand before taking up a research position with African Explosives and Chemical Industries Ltd in Johannesburg, South Africa.
After two years in research, Mandy attended the University of Pretoria where she completed a Masters degree by research in Organometallic Chemistry and Computational Crystallography. She published her master's thesis: The Synthesis and Characterisation of Bithiophene Complexes in 2001 and this research lead to two publications in international journal, Inorganica Chimica Acta.
In 1998, Mandy took up a position in the research department of a powder coating company then known as Courtauld's Coatings, which soon after became Akzo Nobel Powder Coatings. Here she developed skills in paint and powder coating technology.
In late 1999, Mandy left Akzo Nobel to take up a position as Laboratory Manager at the University of Johannesburg. She remained in this position - managing 13 laboratories with a team of 8 technicians - until July 2007 when she left to pursue a career in writing, which included work for a variety of clients as a journalist, features writer, public relations account manager and copywriter.
In 2008, Mandy and her family moved to Australia where Mandy began work as a copywriter and digital marketing manager for a boutique marketing agency in Brisbane.
Mandy joined the APCRC-Q in September 2011 where she works as a scientific writer assisting researchers with grant applications and writing online and print communications pieces to attract interest and funding to the Centre.
